About The Ferment Guide

Slow food in a fast food world.

Why This Exists

The food system got faster. The ingredients list got longer. Fermentation is how you opt out — and it's easier than you think.

The Ferment Guide is a free resource for anyone who wants to make real food at home. Whether you're starting your first jar of sauerkraut or perfecting your sourdough, we break things down into clear, beginner-friendly steps — no gatekeeping, no jargon, no judgment.

What You'll Find Here

We cover the full spectrum of home fermentation:

  • Fermented Vegetables — Sauerkraut, kimchi, pickles, salsa, and more
  • Kombucha & Drinks — Kombucha, water kefir, tepache, ginger bug
  • Sourdough & Bread — Starters, discard recipes, and full loaves
  • Cultured Dairy — Yogurt, kefir, cheese, and butter
  • Fermented Condiments — Hot sauce, miso, mustard, garlic honey
  • Beer & Mead — Homebrewing basics and beyond

Every guide is free, tested, and written so that a complete beginner can follow along. We also curate the tools and ingredients we actually use and recommend.

Who's Behind This

We're Meg and Christian. Christian is the fermenter — he's the one in the kitchen experimenting with new recipes, dialing in techniques, and making sure every guide actually works before it goes live. Meg handles the record keeping, writing, and technical side — building and maintaining the site so everything is easy to find and follow.

It started with a jar of sauerkraut and a lot of questions. We couldn't find a single place that explained things simply, without assuming you already knew what you were doing. So we made one.

The Ferment Guide is the resource we wish we had when we started — approachable, practical, and built for people who want to try something new without feeling overwhelmed.

Our Approach

🔰

Beginner-First

Every guide assumes you're starting from scratch. No prior knowledge required.

🧪

Tested Recipes

Christian makes every recipe before we publish it. If it didn't work in our kitchen, it doesn't go on the site.

🆓

Always Free

All guides are free and always will be. We keep things running through tool recommendations and partnerships.
